As a tech savvy millennial, I’ve listed my apartment on Airbnb since 2010. I have to say it has been a great journey to meet friends from all over the world. However, there is no word that can explain how frustrated on dealing with my mechanical lock. There are keys to deal with, keys to replace, and to top it off there are always security concerns that someone may have kept or copied a key.

I have tried several smart locks, but none of them really work too well. I bought PIN Genie Smart Lock Pro on Kickstarter last year and so far, I have to say, it is one of the best smart lock I have tried and is better than a lot of the other locks on the market.

PIN Genie

No lock is perfect, but I was more than a little skeptical of the PIN Genie Smart Lock for a few reasons. First, I always trusted big brands for a sense of higher security level. PIN Genie is a brand new player in the smart lock category and is essentially a start up.

The PIN Genie PIN pad claims to be much safer than the regular PIN pad. I’ve used the PIN Genie app before and it has a unique feature to the security. The nice thing is that if someone is with me, they can’t just look over my shoulder to get my code.

Second, I was concerned with the installation. I spent over $70 to hire someone to install for me with my last Samsung smart lock. I’m not willing to spend such amount for installation for a lock that costs around $259. Finally, hacking IOT devices has been an issue recently, and that didn’t give me much confidence.

Here is a video by the company that describes very well how it works:

Three-month Testing

Install in 5 minutes

As it says, it is designed for the do it yourself market, and I decided to try to install it myself. It was a very quick pricess. First, as it fits the standard door holes and I do not have to drill a hole myself Second, it only needs two screwdrivers to install.

Convenient and Secure

The PIN Genie Smart Lock provides keyless experience and is one of the main reasons that I use smart locks.Sharing keys with people can be an issue and sometimes they get lost or a tenant gets locked out and I have to take care of it. It’s not safe to pass keys or ask them to leave keys somewhere around the apartment.

The PIN Genie Smart Lock is keyless but so much safer than other locks due to its global patented PIN pad. The PIN pad itself has 12 global patents and it randomly distributes the 10 numbers (0-9) into four buttons and all number reshuffle after each time of use.

There’s a ton of combinations and it locks after a few failed attempts, which makes it almost impossible to guess.

What impressed me most is the mechanism sharing e-key. Most smart locks work through Wi-Fi for convenience. However I did research, and its an easy way to set yourself up to getting hacked. PIN Genie shares an e-certification to guests and enables guests to get the e-key when they arrive through Bluetooth instead of sending the e-key directly.

I can create short codes anywhere I am using my PIN Genie Smart Lock App and send them to my guests. Before they arrive, my guest will only have the code and only when they arrive at my apartment. When they successfully pair with the smart lock with the code I gave my guest can get the e-key.

Other than above safe sharing mechanism, the PIN Genie Smart Lock has a built-in 95dB siren alarm that can be triggered when someone is trying to break into. I always leave the alarm on when I am not at home. If my neighbor hears it they may know something is wrong.

If someone tries to guess the password to get in its a complete waste of time, as the touchscreen will get into safe mode and disable after three wrong attempts. It requires entering the right password in PIN crazy mode twice to re-enable.

I have bought several smart locks, mostly are pricey or at least over $300. PIN Genie Smart Lock Pro only cost me $259. If you do not need the remote control function, the PIN Genie Essential only costs $199. This is a fairly low price for a smart lock.

The PIN Genie Smart Lock is a cost-effective and useful option for anyone wanting to add smarts and an extra level flexible security to the locks in their home. It’s a little pricey but its made to be for someone who wants quality, and is not concerned too much about price. If you’re frugal there are lower quality options on the market.

It’s well designed, easy to install, and most importantly is convenient and secure.

    Hey Taylor,

PIN Genie looks good. So many features are there, especially the remote mobile app.
However, I am a little more concerned about the battery life. How long will the battery last?
Does it work on any direct power source?

    That’s a good question.

I don’t know off the top of my head but that is a good question. I do remember reading about a fail safe somewhere in case the battery did die.
